Introduced in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain name extension is the only one supposed to be for personal websites only. These domain names can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are known by. At the beginning, only third-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to buy john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed 3rd-level names remained working.
